How much bigger should batting be than a quilt top?

This calculator adds 4 inches of overhang on every side, so the batting rectangle is 8 inches wider and 8 inches taller than the finished top.

What if no standard batting package fits?

For a larger quilt, look for batting sold from a wide roll or plan to piece batting according to the manufacturer's directions.
